Island Camps offers a variety of surf programs for all ages and skill levels. Our seasoned instructors of second and third generation surfers take great care in planning each lesson to insure that all of our participants enjoy their surfing experience to the greatest extent possible. We consider many factors, such as current weather and ocean conditions, skill level and interests, and the individual needs of our participants. We are currently offering private one-on-one lessons, small group lessons of 2-4 students, and large group lessons of five or more students. Whether you’re going out for the first time or looking to learn new tricks, we have a lesson designed for you.

Private Lessons
Private lessons are perfect for everyone because you get personalized one-on-one attention from a professional. After ensuring your surfing fundamentals are perfected on the beach, you’ll hit the water to learn the basics of board handling, ocean safety, paddling, and getting to your feet. Small Group Lessons
Small group lessons are perfect for family and friends. Our professional staff will plan a lesson based on your groups interests, skills and goals. Whether you’ve been surfing for a little or a long time, spending a session with your friends and family in the water can be a lot of fun.

Large Group Lessons
Large group lessons are great for birthday parties, corporate team building, bachelor/ bachelorette parties, school field trips, graduation parties, Bar / Bat Mitzvahs, and more. Free Lessons
Island Water Sports has been providing free lessons on Deerfield Beach every Saturday for the past 20 years. It’s our way of promoting a fun and active surf community. All experience levels are welcome- we enjoy introducing the joys of the ocean to beginners, children, and young teens. Simply register for lesson and come on out! Our instructors are friendly, experienced, and love to teach.

Surf Clinic
Our specially-designed surf clinic provides a fun surf session with some one-on-one attention from Island Water Sports professionals, like 20-year vet Kali “Da Big Kahuna” Montero, and surfboard shaper Mike Pechonis. The group lesson is dedicated to providing participants with the best instruction in ocean safety, ocean awareness and surfing skills. Students will learn how to surf safely and with confidence.

Surf Lesson FAQ
- What is the minimum age for surf lessons?
It is recommended that students be at least five years old before they begin lessons.
- Where will the surf lessons be held?
Lessons are usually done on Deerfield Beach on the North side of the peir. However, on request, an instructor may be able to hold the lessons at your hotel or other South Florida beach.
- How long is a lesson usually?
A standard lesson lasts 90 minutes. Thirty minutes are allowed for beach safety and travel to the beach; then at least one hour of time in the water.
- What should I bring with me to the lesson?
You should bring a towel, sunscreen, a rash guard or extra t-shirt, and a camera for lot of great photo opportunities.
- It is cutomary to tip the instructor?
Just like any service business, tips are always appreciated but not required. A standard 10%-20% is always appreciated if you feel it was a good lesson.

My name is Michael Pechonis,
-I've been surfing for 35 years
-I've been teaching Surfing for over 15 years
-I've taught over 25,000 people how to surf
-I own Bird Surfboards and shape surfboards for a living. I also work at Island Water Sports in the capacity of Surf instructor, Surf Reporter, Camp Director, Trip Leader and Adviser. I've surfed in England, Costa Rica, the East coast of the United States and The Bahamas. I Love building things, working with people and teaching them how to surf.

William "Skeeter" Zimmerman
Skeeter was born in Deerfield Beach, Florida in 1984. Skeeter's father taught him how to surf at age five when his family moved to Kona, Hawaii. Surfing has been Skeeter's passion and lifestyle ever since. Skeeter began teaching surf lessons at age 16. He realized how rewarding it was to spread his knowledge of the sport to others. Skeeter is a certified lifeguard and was recently certified as an EMT.
Skeeter has been surfing for over 20 years, competing for 15 years, and teaching for over 10 years. Island Water Sports was actually Skeeter's first sponsor at age 10!!!
